Planning For The Preliminary Project

Brief
Continuity editing task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.

________________

As a group of three we came up with a story where there is a criminal in a police station being interviewed by two police officers.

  • In the first frame we have an establishing shot of the suspect sitting in the interview room waiting to be interviewed.
  • The second frame shows continuity editing as we show the police officers going from opening the door to being inside the room walking through the door and sitting down using a long shot so the scenery can be seen.
  • The third frame is when the police officers and the suspect exchange dialogue in an interview. In this interview we are using shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule to show the situation is realistic and there's no disorientation.
  • In the fourth frame we have a close up of the suspects face and the camera then zooms into his face into an extreme close up here we will use non diagetic sound to create suspense.
  • The fifth frame the lights cut out and the suspect is no longer in his chair and diagetic screaming sounds are used.
  • The the final frame we place the camera on the floor showing the police officers are then murdered and we then see the suspect leave the room as the camera is on the floor we can only see the suspects feet and blood dripping as the scene ends.

We made a story board for our idea:

We are panning to film this later on today. The props we will need are a knife for the murder and handcuffs, we will need the police officers to be dressed in suits and the suspect in a jumpsuit. We we will need fake blood to use to make the murders look realistic. We will need to create the scenery by using large sheets of paper to cover walls and make it look like a police interview room. We will use dim lighting for the interview and create that by shutting out all natural light and using lamps and for the final frame we will use an extremely dim light so it's only light enough for the viewer to see the main subjects of the frame.
